Country of Origin:

The Havamalt is a designer hybrid breed consisting of Havanese and Maltese. The breed originated in recent years in the United States. The Havamalt was originally developed as a way to amplify only the best qualities of both breeds involved. It is not uncommon for puppies from the same litter to look quite different, as often the puppies will take on physical characteristics resembling more closely one parent or the other. As a designer breed, information regarding the Havamalt is scarce. If you have additional questions, consider contacting a local Havamalt breeder or one of the Havamalt accepting registries. The Havamalt can currently be registered with the American Canine Hybrid Club, Designer Dogs Kennel Club, Dog Registry of America, Inc., International Designer Canine Registry and the Designer Breed Registry.

The Havamalt typically reaches heights of 8-11 inches and an average weight of 6-13 lbs, making them ideal for life in smaller dwellings. However, the size of the dog may vary depending on the size of the parents.

Havamalt, as a designer hybrid, may have a coat that more closely resembles one breed more than the other. However, generally speaking, the Havamalt will likely exhibit a hypo-allergenic coat ideal for those with allergies. The Havamalt often exhibits a full double coat. The topcoat should feel silky to the touch, while the undercoat will likely be coarser in texture.

The Havamalt is sweet in nature and lively. They are an ideal companion pet and will be thrilled to spend all of their time with you. However, due to this attachment, the Havamalt is not an ideal pet to be left alone for long periods of time. They may develop separation anxiety or simply get themselves into trouble if left alone for too long. The Havamalt is known to do well with children with proper socialization. It is very important to socialize your Havamalt around children from a young age to ensure the exhibit proper behavior. The Havamalt is a very intelligent breed and eager to receive your praise, making them relatively easy to train.

The Havamalt is a mix of the Havanese and the Maltese dog breeds. A mixed breed dog can have a combination of any of the temperament and characteristics of any breed involved. It is recommended that you thoroughly research all breeds involved in your mixed breed puppy to ensure that you are amenable and prepared for any of the possibilities

The Havamalt is considered to be a relatively high maintenance dog. The coat requires frequent brushing to prevent knots and matting. Regular baths are also required to keep the Havamalt's coat in the best condition. The Havamalt will likely require a degree of professional grooming. The Havamalt is typically a healthy breed with no noted major health concerns. The only exception being the possibility of Hip Dyslplasia, which can be determined through testing of the Dam and Sire. To best prepare yourself for all possible health concerns, it is best to research common health issues present in both the Havanese and Maltese breeds.

The Havamalt is a quick learner and their eagerness to please make them an easy dog to train. When training and socializing, a gentle approach should be taken ensuring that appropriate praise is given. The Havamalt is a docile and easy going breed. Too much aggression and/or hostility during training may have adverse affects. However, it is still necessary to ensure that you are a consistent and firm pack leader while training your Havamalt.

The Havamalt is happiest when they are with their family. They are a companion dog. The Havamalt will adapt to the family's lifestyle. However, they will thrive best when living indoors with just some sort of daily exercise, be it a walk or just some playtime.
